About Oxford University Press India

Oxford University Press (OUP) is a department of the University of Oxford. It furthers the University’s objective of excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing worldwide.

OUP is the world’s largest University press, publishing more than 4,500 new books a year; it has a presence in more than fifty countries and employs some 3,700 people worldwide. OUP has became familiar to millions through a diverse publishing programme that includes scholarly works in all academic disciplines, school and higher education textbooks, children’s books, materials for teaching English as a foreign language, dictionaries and reference books, and journals.

OUP in India is a microcosm of the Press’s worldwide organization. Like OUP internationally, it propagates the liberal objectives of the University to further education and learning through publication; and, like every other branch, it does so in a fashion that reflects the specific needs of the country that it serves.

OUP India was established in 1912 in Bombay (now Mumbai). After Mumbai, offices were quickly established in Chennai and Kolkata, and an office at Delhi was opened in 1972. With the opening of the Delhi office, the headquarters of OUP India shifted from Mumbai to Delhi.

OUP India has made substantial investments in its editorial resources and in modern production, and design facilities so that its books reflect a tradition of excellence. Today, OUP India publishes close to 300 books every year, both new books and revised editions. OUP India’s publishing operations currently fall into three distinct areas: academic and general reference, school education, and higher education. Its academic list, especially in the social sciences, is widely acknowledged to be the most distinguished in the world on subjects of particular relevance to South Asia. OUP India has a well-established educational publishing programme to cater to the key curriculum requirements of Indian schools from the pre-primary to the higher secondary level. It is acknowledged as a foremost English Language Teaching (ELT) publisher in the country. Besides its strong ELT list, OUP India also has a rapidly growing list of texts in the humanities and social sciences as also in science and mathematics.

Recently, OUP India has embarked on an ambitious higher education programme, with special focus on the disciplines of engineering and management, to primarily meet the requirements of Indian students. Besides these lists, OUP India also publishes atlases and bilingual dictionaries in various Indian languages. Across the entire spectrum of OUP publishing in India, there is a specific regional component, fulfilling the vision of the Delegates of the Press and serving the needs of the region’s academic and educational community as their major University press.

OUP India has established a modern all-India Central Warehouse at NOIDA, near Delhi, which is spread over 35,000 sq. ft. To reflect its status as one of the largest publishers in India, OUP India has now established showrooms in Bangalore, Pune, Lucknow, Patna, Hyderabad, Guwahati, Trivandrum, Chandigarh and Jaipur. These showrooms cater to the growing requirements of academics, school, college and university students, professional and research institutions, as also general readers.
